On the northwest side of the island, a little road leads to a remarkable viewpoint over the famous Agios Georgios Bay, known as Shipwreck Bay (Navagio; sign "Shipwreck"). Indeed, the sight is quite something: at the foot of the sheer cliff there nestles a creek with turquoise, almost milky-looking waters. And on the immaculate sand lies the rusting wreck of a ship, the Panayotis, which ran aground here in the 1980s after a violent storm. A small gangway has been built to provide a vantage point over the site. The only way to get to this idyllic place is by boat.
