Taksim Square, where a monument commemorating the Turkish War of Independence takes pride of place, is the hub of Istanbul and its main metro station. It owes its name (maksem or reservoir) to the water distribution centre that was formerly located here. The esplanade, which is plagued by heavy traffic, is now lined with large hotels. It has incited controversy since the decision was made to extend it by carving into the neighbouring Taksim Park, the green lung of the city since the 19C.
