Zagreb grew out of two settlements: Kaptol, the Episcopal city, and Gradec, the feudal city. Although its upper section lacks a little atmosphere, Gradec is a real gem which becomes livelier as you head down to the market. Take time to search out its hidden treasures by exploring its courtyards, carriage entrances and cellar cafés, occasionally heading up unexpected flights of steps which offer glimpses of the surrounding hills above its gardens. The perfect place for a leisurely stroll.
