The lighthouse was built in 1854 to replace an older lantern tower, which can be made out near the shoreline and can be reached by continuing down the path. The spiral staircase with 257 steps leads to a gallery at the top of the lighthouse, affording a view of the Vendée coast, the Pertuis Breton strait and Pointe de l'Aiguillon to the east, and Oléron to the south. At low tide the fish locks at the point are also visible. Informative interactive display in the museum.
