The old Santa Maria della Scala hospital, built in the 10C and in use as a hospital until as recently as the 1990s, is now a museum and cultural centre housing exhibitions, a contemporary art centre (SMS Contemporanea), a children's art museum, the restoration project of the Fonte Gaia in Piazza del Campo, and an archaeological section. The Pellegrinaio, the most stunning room in the building, is covered with frescoes by Domenico di Bartolo (1428-47).
