Legend has it that it was in the famous Dikteon Cave that Rhea hid her son Zeus, the future master of the gods and of the universe, to save him from the insatiable appetite and jealousy of her husband, Cronos. It was also a place of worship from the Middle Minoan period. Perched 1 025m above sea level, it is the main attraction in the region. The cavern, down into which visitors take a very steep staircase, is made up of a large chamber. You then come to a tiny subterranean lake.
