This medieval square in the centre of old Mantua is bordered by the Palazzo Bonacolsi, which is flanked by the Torre della Gabbia (named after the iron cage in which wrongdoers were once exposed to public condemnation) and the Palazzo Vescovile, the façade of which stands out for its two atlantes supporting a balcony. To the east are the oldest buildings of the Palazzo Ducale, la Magna Domus and the Palazzo del Capitano. To the north stands the Cathedral (Duomo), which features various elements and styles.
