In the Middle Ages, parish clerks used to put on mystery plays by a well here, hence the derivation of the district's name. Vestiges of the well can be seen at n°14-16 Farringdon Lane. Historically a lively working-class quarter, Clerkenwell is today a fashionable district of loft apartments and glass-fronted offices. Farringdon Road has the offices of national newspapers: Morning Star at n°75 (in a 1949 building by E Goldfinger) and The Guardian at n°119.
