Wellbrook Beetling Mill is the last mill that once used to pound linen. The linen was beaten by wooden hammers attached to a water wheel, until the fabric was supple, shiny and covered in a damask-like finish. The ear-splitting cacophony produced by the pounding process, that you will see at the end of the visit, was such that most of the workers were deaf by the end of their working lives. The manufacturing process is explained upstairs.
