At the frontier between the Golden Horn and the modern city, Galata Hill rises up to the tower of the same name, which commands a splendid 360° view over the city. To reach the summit, take the underground cable car, or Tünel, Istanbul's pride and joy; this 560m-long "subway" is one of the oldest in the world (dating from 1874), just after New York and London. If you have the energy, a walk up the hill will take you through the lively maze of lanes that rise up along the flanks of the hill.
