As the seat of state government, the imposing hilltop capitol (1886, Elijah Myers) is home to the General Assembly and offices of the governor and other officials. Constructed over 22 years in the shape of a Greek cross, the granite capitol is a smaller version of the US Capitol. Its gilded gold-leaf dome, a gleaming 272ft-high landmark, once dominated the city scene. From the third-floor rotunda, 93 steps climb into the dome for a commanding view of the surrounding city.
