By the coastal road, Point Lobos peninsula is named after the resident sealions, whose barking reminded the Spanish explorers of the howling of wolves (lobos). You can explore Whalers Cove, site of a 19C whaling station, then head off down seashore paths, such as Bird Island Trail, which commands fine views of the coast and sea, and Sea Lion Point Trail to observe the sealions (bring binoculars).
