Founded by Padre Junípero Serra in 1771, the San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo mission is the second largest in California after San Diego. Among the interesting features in the church, note the superb vaulted ceiling with unusual curved arches, the walls decorated with paintings and the dome-shaped bell tower. In the old monks' residence, some of the rooms, such as the kitchen, dining room, library and Junípero Serra's cell, have been reconstructed.
