These picturesque groups of houses reflect the social diversity of Wolfenbüttel under the Dukes. Majestic façades with high overhangs on either side of the main entrance distinguish the homes of High Court officials, most of them built c 1600. The decoration of smaller houses, owned by lesser dignitaries and merchants, is more elaborate. The simpler two-storey houses of the less well-to-do are prettily ornamented with coloured fan designs.
