Democracy Square is presided over by an equestrian statue of Grand Duke Karl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1757-1828). On the south side, the University of Music Franz Liszt occupies the former palace (1770-74). Today, the 16C-18C pale pink palace houses the Duchess Anna Amalia Library. In addition to incunabula, it contains valuable printed works from the 16C and 17C, and some 18C first editions.
