The high pastures of the headland of Ebenalp, encircled by cliffs, encroach over the Appenzell, the contours of which are a patchwork of farmsteads. From Ebenalp, you can walk back down to Wasserauen, along one of two different paths (1hr45min). One goes through the 80m-long Wildkirchli cave tunnel, where digs have unearthed the vestiges of Switzerland's oldest prehistoric settlement; the other, more strenuous, skirts Lake Seealp.
