This roundabout was named in 1890 after General Philip H. Sheridan (1831-1888), a Civil War hero. His equestrian statue (1908) stands in the centre; it was created by Gutzon Borglum, who is well known for having designed the huge heads of the American presidents at Mount Rushmore. At no 2301 the striking four-storey mansion with a convex façade and Palladian feel is the residence of the Egyptian ambassador.
