Built in the Pisan Romanesque style, the cathedral has three naves with monolithic columns and a coffered ceiling depicting heaven and the saints of Volterra. The Chapel of the Addolorata boasts a fresco by Benozzo Gozzoli, the Journey of the Magi, which serves as a background for the terracotta multi-coloured crib by Zaccaria Zacchi da Volterra (1473-1544). Also of interest are works by Dominiquin and Pomarancio and, especially, a superb Descent from the Cross in multi-coloured poplar wood.
