At the foot of the Maramures mountains, the little town of Viseu de Sus has derived its income from the wood trade since the 18C. To get the felled trees to the sawmills, a railway line was built in the 1930s. It runs for 42km from Viseu to the "halta" of Comanu (the loggers' base camp). Following landslides, the tourist train now only runs as far as Paltin (21.6km). Here you can get off, picnic and stretch your legs before the return journey.
