Sognefjord (and its multiple arms) is the longest of the Norwegian fjords (205km) and one of the most impressive. By turns grandiose, enigmatic, wild, austere, bright and colourful, its landscapes appear in all their splendour in late spring, when the fruit trees in flower against the backdrop of the snowy mountains form an idyllic scene. A few villages lie on the banks and have ornate wooden stave churches.
