50km south of Logroño, the River Iregua cuts through the Ebro plain between a landscape of orchards and market gardens. Around Islallana, the landscape changes and the river is dominated by the impressive cliffs of the Sierra de Cameros. The valley then narrows, enclosed between massive reddish-coloured rocks and the river is squeezed into a canyon as the corniche road overlooks the village of Torrecilla de Cameros. Villanueva de Cameros is characterised by half-timbered houses crowned by round-tiled roofs.
