The ancient city of Aigai overlooks the plain through which the Haliacmon River winds. Today designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first capital of Macedonia has yielded a wealth of information on the splendour of Macedonian civilisation and one of Antiquity's most glorious kingdoms. Access by visitors to the ancient city has been suspended for an as-yet indefinite period due to major restoration works, but the Aigai Necropolis alone is enough to delight Ancient Greece enthusiasts.
