The vivid colours of the tiny fishermen's cottages are undeniably eye-catching. Repainted each year, the bright hues were said to help the fishermen out at sea to identify their homes... Despite the daytime crowds, the island is only 45 minutes from Venice, Burano remains a village whose inhabitants continue to uphold ancestral traditions: little old ladies continue to make lace using time-honoured techniques in their cottages, while children play peacefully in the streets.
