Nuestra Señora de los Desamperados basilica was built during the second half of the 17C. It houses a statue of the venerated patron saint of Valencia, the Virgin of the Helpless, who, strangely enough, is ranked as the senior general of the Spanish armed forces! The cupola of the sanctuary was painted by Antonio Palomino in 1701. Housed on the first floor, the MUMA museum has an exhibition dedicated to the evolution of the Marian theme in art.
