Um ar-Rasas is the home of mosaic masterpieces, some of which are remarkably well preserved, and which cover the floors of several churches. They date from the Byzantine Empire and the early days of the Islamic period. The finest of the mosaics, in the church of St Stephen, depicts a series of towns lying around Jordan. Elsewhere you will see motifs of flowers and animals, including big cats. This Unesco World Heritage Site continues to be excavated, meaning further marvellous discoveries may yet be made.
