Along with Tournai, Tongres, the seat of Ambiorix, a chief of the Eburones, is Belgium's oldest settlement and one of the richest in archaeological terms. The museum boasts extensive collections from prehistory to the Middle Ages: a mysterious Gallo-Roman dodecahedron, Merovingian grave goods, pottery, statues, glass, coins and jewellery from the Gallo-Roman era. The main attractions are a huge statue of Jupiter and a bronze oil vessel representing a young Nubian.
