The site's history goes back a million years. Stone Age hunters, Copper Age settlers, citizens of an Iron Age town that traded with Egypt and Cyprus, Greeks, Romans and Byzantines, all have capitalised upon Pella's resources: reliable springs, communication networks favourable to trade, arable land and plenty of wood. Its long history runs from Antiquity into the Mamluk period. Today, Pella continues to yield valuable information on little-known epochs, especially the Abbasid era.
