The Bükk range (a national park) is part of the northern mountain chain which is an extension of the Mátra, stretching from Gyöngyös to Miskolc on the Slovak border. Its highest peak, Istállós-ko, only rises to 959m. The range is flanked by the Sajó river to the north, the Eger river to the west, and by the Great Plain to the south. The region is unique for its 800 or so caves, the most typical of which are at Lillafüred. Another sight of interest is Szilvásvárad, home to the famous Lipizzaner horses.
