The huge 5-hectare square in the middle of town is planted with all kinds of trees, magnolias and lovely flowerbeds and graced with statues and fountains. Among the statues are those of the people who came to the rescue during the flood in 1879. The River Tisza is also personified, appearing in two guises, destructive and generous. The square is popular with Szeged's inhabitants, who come here at all hours of the day and in all seasons.
