Set away from the town's busy main streets, the oldest garden in Suzhou was built in the 11C by the poet Shu Shunqin. The main courtyard is entirely occupied by a hill, on top of which stands the Great Wave Pavilion, and surrounded by a gallery pierced by 108 sculpted windows. Water is only present here on the exterior, in the form of a canal visible from the Contemplation of the Fish pavilion. In a side courtyard, admire a pleasant pavilion surrounded by bamboo.
