To the north, the Fort neighbourhood is the oldest district of Saint Pierre, and was built, as its name suggests, around the first fort which was built by Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc. Its cobbled lanes make for a pleasant stroll, and here, as in other parts of the town, you will see traces of the eruption of 1902, beginning with the Fort's church. The 18C bridge that spans the Roxelane was one of the few monuments to survive the catastrophe.
