The Piton de la Fournaise is still active and sometimes awakens, leaving lava flows at each eruption that can cross the road (N 2 running along the southeast coast) and run all the way into the sea! The track, signposted with ceramic plaques, starts from the seaside, whose mighty swell smashes into the vertical cliffs year round. It follows an old lava flow leading to the Pointe de la Table, which still bears the scars of the 1986 eruption, even though nature has reasserted itself.
