One of the best-known kukeri is the one which takes place at Shiroka Laka (near Smoljan). It is one of the most spectacular of Bulgaria's village festivals, celebrated primarily in the Rhodopes, the Rila and the Pirin, on the first Sunday of March. On this day, youngsters in animal skins disguised by zoomorphic masks (depicting the kukeri) dance through the villages, driving out the evil spirits who could jeopardise the harvest, by scaring them with huge cow bells strapped to their waists.
