The bars and restaurants of Plaza de España are a major draw for Dominicans at weekends and during major festivals. The Alcázar de Colón, residence of the Viceroys of Spain, was built by the river in the 16C, at the same time as the town. Nearby are the Museo de Las Casas Reales and Museo Naval de la Atarazana, whose collections are devoted to the colonial era; the Museo Mundo del Ámbar, meanwhile, showcases many specimens of amber.
