Like four other bridges in France (in Brest, Marseille, Rouen and Nantes), this one was built (in 1900) by engineer Ferdinand Arnodin. A Listed Monument, it is 176m long and 50m above the Charente River. It was reopened in 1994 and is now used by pedestrians and cyclists. At Échillais, just south of Rochefort, the Transporter Bridge Centre charts the history of the bridge.
