The Church of St Nicholas (Nikolaikirche), one of the finest examples of German neo-Classical architecture, overlooks the square. The dome, finished in 1850, is modelled on St Peter's Basilica in Rome. The architecture of Barberini Palace, built in 1771 and now an exhibition centre, is also inspired by Italy. At no 9, the Potsdam Museum, housed in the old town hall (1755) designed by Jan Bouman, charts a thousand years of Potsdam history.
