Pointe-à-Pitre is renowned for its many markets, but it is Marché St-Antoine (mornings, west of rue Frébault) that eclipses all others. This is the quintessential island market, its stalls groaning with spices, punch and other local specialities. Popular with tourists, this busy market opens at 6am and is almost exclusively run by local women, affectionately referred to as "doudous" dressed in the traditional madras fabric.
