The main square in Pilsen, Namestí Republiky, is also the largest square in Bohemia. It is fronted by buildings from different periods, including the flamboyant Renaissance town hall on its north side. The square is also home to a beautiful Gothic parish church and, at n° 12/105, to the house of General Wallenstein who, during the winter of 1633-34, betrayed his emperor by demanding that his officers pledge allegiance to him personally. The Plague Column dates from 1681.
