Despite its huge bulk and solid appearance, the cathedral has a light feeling thanks to the subtle decoration of arcading, galleries and windows which make it such an elegant building. There is an impressive façade, a marquetry work of multi-coloured marble, and the superb San Ranieri doorway (on the tower side) with detailed bronze panels in its doors, opening onto an impressive interior with its pulpit by Giovanni Pisano... and the famous "Galileo lamp".
