Surrounded by its 600m-long curtain wall, reinforced with three bastions, Agios Georgios (St George) dates back to the 13C. The kástro (citadel), which was the capital of the island until 1757, had 15 000 inhabitants, but was devastated by an earthquake in 1636. From the rampart walk the view reaches over the fertile Livatho Plain and as far as the island of Zakynthos.
