Located on a hill to the east of Pau, the avenue of the same name joins the Trespoey neighbourhood to the city. It was in the middle of the 19C that it prospered, when wealthy English people moved here building lavish villas, set in extensive grounds overlooking the Pyrenees. Among those worthy of mention are: Navarre, St Basil's, Beit Rahat, San Carlos, Nitot (now a documentation centre and home of the Pau orchestra), and the Palais Sorrento.
