The greatly remodelled building one visits today has little in common with the former palace of the Kings of France. The Salle des Pas perdus corresponds to the Great Gothic Philippe le Bel Hall, while the First Civil Court occupies the apartment of Saint Louis. The regional law courts, formerly also located here, have been moved to a new 160m-high building, designed by Renzo Piano in the Clichy-Batignolles district.
