Toadying can sometimes lead to excessive sums being spent: this was the case of poor Marshal La Feuillade, who spent 7 million livres to show his admiration for the Sun King, by building this square in his honour. Designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, it is beautifully laid out with extremely elegant façades and luxury boutiques surrounding it. The statute to the king disappeared in 1792. La Feuillade had died suddenly one hundred years previously.
