The first stone of this church was laid in 1653. Jules Hardouin-Mansart then Robert de Cotte worked on the building where Pierre Corneille, Le Nôtre and Diderot are buried. The Église St-Roch is preceded by 13 steps, which compensate for the difference in elevation of the former hillock, Butte St-Roch. This is a huge building and one of the churches in Paris with the richest array of artworks, many of which come from the destruction of the monasteries, Couvent des Jacobins and Couvent des Feuillants.
