Built in the 14C, Bellver Castle offers a unique view across the bay. Once the summer residence of the Kings of Majorca, it later became a prison. The writer Jovellanos was imprisoned here from 1801 to 1808. A keep dominates the astonishing circular shapes of the buildings and precinct. The arcades on the ground floor shelter Roman statues, bequeathed by Cardinal Despuig. The prelate's Italian collections are linked, in the History Museum, with the ruins of ancient Pollentia (Alcudia).
