The masterpieces in this museum include the metopes (Doric bas-reliefs dating from the 6C BC) and the tomb of the diver, a rare example of Greek funerary painting: the dive, an allegory of the passage from life to death, depicts the leap beyond the columns of Hercules (the present Straits of Gibraltar), the limit of the known world. Finally, there is a superb collection of vases and, from the small underground temple, painted Lucanian tombs and a terracotta flower lady used as an incense burner.
