If you see only one church in Ouro Preto, make it the Igreja São Francisco de Assis, the Baroque masterpiece of Antônio Francisco Lisboa (Aleijadinho). Two round bell towers stand atop the church, lending a sense of harmony to the whole. Inside, the perspective of the ceiling's fresco depicts Ataíde, the chancel is adorned with wooden panels, painted à la azulejos, while the gilt wooden altarpiece of the high-altar features statues of saints.
