This impressive 270m-long stone castle was built by the Hohenstaufen family in the 12C on a promontory overlooking the Alsace plain at an altitude of 800m. The sandstone outcrop provided an ideal observation post over all the surrounding roads. The views from the top of the bastion are particularly memorable, spanning the horizon, which is dotted with villages clustered around churches and a patchwork of vineyards, forests and farmland.
