Built during the rule of Augustus, this theatre is the pride and joy of Orange and is the only Roman theatre to have kept its stage wall almost intact. The amphitheatre with its 34 stands had a 7,000 spectator capacity. In 2006, the stage was covered by a glass roof, reminiscent of the velum sheet canvas that would have sheltered the audience from the sun. Every year, the famous Chorégies music festival is staged here.
