When it was first opened in 1934, this was the largest boat lift in the world. Today, this structure, a real feat of technical engineering on the Oder-Havel canal, allows boats to overcome a 36m difference in elevation, transporting a 1 000t barge in just five minutes. Visitors can watch the lift operating from an observation platform. A new lift, under construction since 2009, will soon replace the old one, making it possible for even heavier boats to use the facility.
